Pakistani-origin NYPD officer dies of injuries from shooting

A Pakistani-origin police officer in the US, who was shot in the head while off duty on Saturday, died on Tuesday night. Police have arrested the armed person who shot 26-year-old Adeed Fayyaz, and started an investigation.

On Monday evening, suspect Randy Jones, 38, was apprehended in Rockland County. He has been charged with attempted robbery and murder.

In East New York, the shooting took place on Ruby Street near Linden Boulevard around 7 p.m. on Saturday.

According to authorities, Fayaz, 26, went to the location after arranging a meeting with a man to purchase a car on Facebook Marketplace. However, the seller pulled out a gun and tried to rob him, so Fayaz left.

The victim was not aware that the suspect was a member of the New York Police Department, according to the investigation.

The officer was married with two children and had been with the force for five years. He was from Deer Park, Long Island, according to sources.

Keechant Sewell, the City of New York’s police commissioner, hailed Adeed as a “Protector of our great city” in a tweet.

He penned: Adeed Fayaz, a police officer, was a husband, a father, a son, and a protector of our great city. Officer Fayaz tragically passed away from his wounds Saturday night.

He stated that the department deeply regretted his passing and prayed for his loved ones and family.

The suspect, 38, faces charges of attempted robbery and murder. He may have used Facebook Marketplace to lure Fayaz to his death over the weekend, according to the investigation.

The New York Police Department employs approximately 500 Pakistani police officers.
