PML-N decides against challenging LHC decision on Punjab Assembly polls
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided not to stall the process of holding elections for the dissolved Punjab Assembly (PA), party sources said on Saturday.
On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over an emergency meeting in Lahore to discuss the strategy for the upcoming elections for the Punjab Assembly.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) had earlier on Friday ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to announce the dates for the Punjab Assembly elections within the allotted 90 days.
According to sources within the party, PML-N president Shehbaz had earlier in the day called a meeting of party leaders and legal experts to discuss their options.
According to sources, the primary decision was made that the party would not object to polls being held on a date set by the supreme electoral body.
However, it was noted that the ECP’s decision to challenge the LHC order would be independent because it was an independent body.
The party’s readiness to go to the polls when they are announced was emphasized.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar provided a presentation on the 16-page court order during the meeting.
Additionally, the advantages of presenting it to the Supreme Court were discussed.
PM Shehbaz had earlier on Saturday called an emergency meeting of his legal experts and other political leaders to discuss the LHC’s orders to the ECP to announce elections for the dissolved Punjab Assembly.
