However, the ECP decided against the referendum within the stipulated time as the Council of Common Interest (CCI) a few days before the dissolution of the meetings, Approved the Seventh Population and Housing Census 2023.

The CCI’s approval required the commission to hold elections after a fresh demarcation in light of the census results.

Then, on August 17, the ECP announced a new demarcation schedule according to the new census results.

But in September, the commission announced that general elections in the country would be held in the last week of January 2024.

In the same month, the ECP also released a provisional report on the demarcation of constituencies. However, before the announcement, several requests were filed in the Supreme Court against the delay in the referendum.

All petitioners had asked the Apex court to make sure there were elections within 90 days.

These requests were filed during the reign of former Chief Justice Omar Ati Bandel, however, they were not scheduled for a hearing.
